The Lost Dolphin (Kids Write Books)

I recently had the pleasure of working with students at the Young Authors/Young Artists Conference in Saint Joseph, Minnesota. In my sessions, we brainstormed a story outline. Then students broke into groups and were assigned different parts of the story to write. This story was written by…

May 19, 2017: Session 2

Once upon a time, in the land we live in, deep in the Pacific Ocean, there was a dolphin named Yonathan. He wasn’t the brightest fellow in the sea, but he had many friends because he was brave and kind and loved to play.

One day, he was playing hide and go seek with his friends, and he accidentally swam too far away.

“Where did my friends go?” thought Yonathan.

“Why is it so dark?” he said to no one. He was alone.

It was beginning to get dark. Yonathan knew now he was far from home. He was afraid. There was nothing familiar in sight. Why hadn’t he been paying attention to where he was going? All that he knew was he had to get home. He missed his family, and if he didn’t hurry, he would miss Olivia the Turtle’s birthday party.

As Yonathan swam past the coral reef, he spotted a seahorse. “Excuse me. Could you please help me find my home? I think it’s that way, past the kelp forest.”

“Sorry, I don’t leave the reef,” said the seahorse.

Yonathan headed toward the kelp forest and ran into a barracuda. “Please, help me find my home!”

“Sorry, no clue,” the barracuda replied.

Feeling desperate, Yonathan swam in a random direction.

When Yonathan turned around, he saw a shark named Leon. With an evil grin, Leon chased him farther away from his home.

Yonathan started to feel worried that he’d miss his girlfriend Olivia’s birthday party. He swam as fast as he could and got away from Leon.

Since Yonathan was thinking too much about Olivia’s birthday, he wasn’t paying attention to his surroundings again. He heard a noise and turned around to see an entire group of sharks that Leon was leading toward him.

Yonathan started swimming fast and went into a cave. Leon and his gang couldn’t fit inside.

After a little while, Yonathan peeked out. All of a sudden, a talking potato hit his head!

Yonathan came out of the cave and met Leon once again. Yonathan was ready to swim away, but he heard Leon apologize and say he’d take him home, now.

After a while of swimming with Leon, Yonathan ran into the talking potato again.

The potato whispered, “Leon is taking you in the wrong direction.”

Yonathan quickly swam away from Leon.

But… he forgot Olivia’s gift! He forgot it all along. He knew Olivia would be devastated.

While all of this was going on, Leon brainwashed the potato to join his side! Their gang chased Yonathan into a bunch of exploding jellyfish!

Yonathan was smart enough to swim away, but Leon chased him back to the exploding jellyfish.

Yonatham swam into a wall, and a boulder fell on him. The jellyfish got scared by the noise and stung him, knocking him out.

Yonathan woke up in a fisherman’s boat. He wouldn’t give up because he loved Olivia. He said, “I will not give up.”

He was lying in the boat, absolutely clueless on what to do. He wrestled in his position, and he discovered a hole on one side.

When the fisherman turned around to catch fish, Yonathan climbed the ladder into the sea.

Unfortunately, Leon was under the boat—but he swam right into the fisherman’s net!

Yonathan swam for a while, until he ran into his friend, Andrea, a chicken. Andrea led Yonathan home. On the way, Yonathan found a seashell for Olivia’s birthday. He also decided to give her Andrea for a pet.

After Yonathan arrived at home, he grabbed the shell and wrapped it in seaweed. He rushed to the party.

Olivia was the only one there.

“Where’s everyone else?” asked Yonathan.

“I’m the mastermind of your whole adventure,” Olivia replied with a smirk.

“What?” Yonathan exclaimed.

Leon swam in. “We’re a thing now,” he said. “Olivia’s my girlfriend, so back off!”

Yonathan dug into his shell and pulled out a pearl. He handed it to Andrea. “Now we’re a thing,” said Yonathan.

With that, the two groups departed.
