The Football Dancer (Kids Write Books)

I recently had the pleasure of working with students at the Young Authors/Young Artists Conference in Saint Joseph, Minnesota. In my sessions, we brainstormed a story outline. Then students broke into groups and were assigned different parts of the story to write. This story was written by…

May 17, 2017: Session 2

Once upon a time, there was a football player named Tyler. People thought he was funny, crazy (in a good way), and kind. Tyler was playing in a football game.

After the game, Tyler took his sister, Karly, to ballet. He watched her, and he had a thought. “What if I could be a ballerina, too?”

He thought about the idea until the next football practice. He spotted the football. He went in for the run, and he could no longer hold it back. He stepped on his left foot and leapt over the white center line, like a ballerina.

His teammates shouted with a mocking laugh, “Go join the ballet, and get out of football!”

Tyler took off his helmet and shouted back, “I will!” He grabbed his things and headed home.

Early the next morning, instead of going to football practice, he went and tried out for ballet. Tyler walked in at the same time that Bill, the instructor, was leaping in the air. Bill crashed to the ground because of the loud door swing.

Bill walked up to Tyler and slapped him.

Tyler tried to impress Bill by leaping, but he slammed into the ground because he was not flexible.

Another football player, Jace, was in the room and got very jealous of Tyler. He decided to kill Tyler, so he could be in the spotlight.

Around town, people started teasing Tyler because he wanted to be a ballerina. His friends were making him do the silent treatment for a week. But Tyler thought he could be anything he wanted, no matter what his gender.

Jace secretly killed Bill and pretended to be Dr. Cat. He hit Tyler in the knee cap and hurt it really bad. It swelled up.

During a game, Tyler was sprinting toward the touchdown zone when Jace put a banana peel on the field. Tyler slipped. Little did he know he broke his nose. Then his sister, Karly, got mad at him because he made a huge scene and embarrassed her.

When Tyler went in for his checkup, Dr. Cat told him that he couldn’t dance because he was terrible—and he was a boy.

On his way back home, he noticed a glowing bush. He found a magic potion there and used it to heal his injuries. Jace forgot to put his wig on, so Tyler found out that Jace was Dr. Cat!

Jace hurried home in Dr. Cat’s uniform. His mom realized he was never a doctor. She grounded him for a week. Then she figured out that Jace was killing people. She called the police, and he went to jail.

Meanwhile, Tyler started to do some disco dancing and worked his way up to be a ballerina, which was his dream job ever since he took his sister to ballet practice.

A traveling circus came to town, and Tyler joined as a ballerina. There, he met the coach tightrope walker, Diana. She was stunning and perfect in every way!

After seven months together, Tyler popped the question. “Will you marry me?”

“Yes!” Diana said.

One day, Tyler was accepted into the Professional Ballerina League. He became rich, and they lived happily ever after with their baby, Sarah.
